October 19, 2011

Blue State Coffee

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Thank you to Blue State Coffee and the community for supporting our mission!- Blue State Coffee held a fundraising event that supported Liberty Community Services from January through July 2011. Customers who visited Blue State's 276 York Street location in New Haven had the opportunity to learn about Liberty's work and could vote to support the agency; the more votes that Liberty received, the greater the amount that Blue State donated to the agency. With the close of the fundraiser, Liberty received a donation of $1800 from Blue State Coffee! This donation supports our Sunday Brunch Program serving the homeless community in New Haven.

June 16, 2011

A Liberty Board member, Johnny Scafidi, is involved in afterschool mentoring at the Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School in New Haven. All students who are interested in the New Haven Promise program are required to do some community service and the students from Cooperative Arts chose Liberty as a cause after hearing about it from Johnny and another Board member, Jeff Hudson.

This Year's Project STYLE a Great Success

April 27, 2011

Liberty Community Services is pleased to announce that it has raised $30,000 through its annual Project STYLE fundraising event. Held on Thursday, April 14th at the New Haven Lawn Club, this silent auction and fashion show starred Project Runway alumnus and New Haven area-born designer, Emmett McCarthy and was hosted by News 8's Emmy Award-winning anchor Sonia Baghdady. The fashion show featured local models who presented dazzling clothing designs by up-and-coming local designers. This year's winning designer was Tia Lynn Waters.

Proceeds from Project STYLE will be used to advance Liberty's mission of providing permanent housing for people who are homeless, living with HIV/AIDS and mental illness. Liberty extends its sincere thanks to all those who contributed to making this event such a great success.

Ending Homelessness for Veterans

March 19, 2011

HARTFORD, Conn. - Here’s a depressing fact. There are currently more Vietnam veterans who are homeless than who died in Vietnam. But progress is being made every year. One of the goals of Liberty Community Services is to connect homeless veterans to the many services and resources available to them. On April 18th, Liberty’s Executive Director, John Bradley, attended a forum in Hartford, Connecticut on ending homelessness for veterans. The New Haven Register has an article about the forum, which can be found here. The federal government has established a goal to end homelessness for veterans and chronically homeless individuals in the next five years. Liberty is part of that effort, working with state, federal, and nonprofit agencies, and it is an exciting goal.

Thanks to giveGreater Challenge, Liberty to Extend Its Sunday Brunch Program

January 6, 2011

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Liberty Community Services is pleased to announce that it has surpassed its goal of obtaining 50 donations of $50 or more in order to receive a matching grant from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven through its giveGreater 2010 Challenge. 59 contributions totaling $3,804 were donated to Liberty, which will very likely qualify the agency for a matching grant of up to $3,000. With these funds, it is now able to extend its Sunday Brunch program through the middle of February 2011.

The Sunday Brunch is open to the entire homeless community in Greater New Haven and serves a minimum of 75 individuals at Liberty's Safe Haven facility. Individuals come from the shelters or the streets for a healthy meal on Sunday mornings. It is an opportunity for people to get out of the cold and isolation of the streets to have a meal served by the Liberty community. In addition, staff members are available at the event to connect people with other services offered by the agency.

giveGreater.org is a new online knowledge and giving resource provided by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. The website offers comprehensive information about nonprofits serving the Greater New Haven region in South Central Connecticut. Potential donors who visit the giving resource and search for Liberty Community Services' profile will find information about the agency, including its mission, programs and services, community impact and financial data.
